Drishtee haat wishes you an eventful and fulfilling World Fair Trade Day this May 10th, 2008!

This year's World Fair Trade Day theme is "For the Planet, For the People" and will be celebrated and promoted in 70 countries around the world. To commemorate this day, many organizations will be hosting fair trade fashion shows, concerts, talks, food tastings and more.

With this year's theme in mind, here are some quick highlights on the connection between fair trade and our environment:

  • Recent severe natural disasters occurred in the developing countries where many handcrafted artisan products are made. India is one of these countries.
  • Handmade production of fair trade products greatly reduces C02 emissions, thus decreasing a key contributor to global warming.
  • Many fair trade products are made of bamboo, hemp, jute, and cane - materials grown mostly without chemical pesticides or fertilizers.
  • Many fair trade items are made from recycled products such as broken bangles, cotton waste, old saris, and scrap metal - materials that are reused to create beautiful items for gifts and home décor.
  • Earth Day, April 22nd, and World Fair Trade Day, May 10th, are less than one month apart from each other, and both represent movements that highlight social awareness, conscious consumerism, and sustainable development.
